  1. Dear all, if you have some time to spend in crowsourcing for remote sensing analysis in disaster relief, then go to tomnod.com i often participates to tomnod campaigns, and it's really amazing.. The Tomnod mission is to utilize the power of crowdsourcing to identify objects and places in satellite images. We created this web app with thousands of volunteers (like you!) in mind. Use our satellite images to explore the Earth, solve real-world problems, and view amazing images of our changing planet. We then compare each team member's findings with another to accurately understand the challenge at hand.

  3. Hi everybody, maybe you go to find useful I am making a map in Map Info. Huge, a lot of layers, included contours at 5 m. I am using what I think it is a strong laptop. I7, 16 GB memory, a SSD disk. But MapInfo is still hanging often, meaning when I select a contour I must expect time to time over 10 seconds to fulfil the command. Same for redrawing and others. I just install software, PrimoCache. It is doing something like an extra cache for the disks, outside of windows normal buffers. Everything is working faster now included other jobs. Mapinfo especially. The software is a shareware with a generous trial, 90days. Maybe will be useful; also for other GIS Regards www.romexsoftware.com/en-us/primo-cache

  4. Areas around Magelang in Central Java were showered with volcanic ashes until Friday morning believed to come from angry Mount Kelud in East Java. The volcano erupted again on Thursday nights. "This morning at 03.00 there were thin ashes but at 04.30 it was getting thick ," a villager, Sucoro, near the famous Borobudur Buddhist temple said. Sucoro said many villager came out to see the temple was blanketed with thick volcanic ashes. The Vulcanology and Geology Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) already warned of more dangerous threat from Mount Kelud before it erupted at 22.56 local time on Thursday. Meanwhile, on Friday morning, hundreds of refugees such as from Wlingi, regency of Blitar, East Java, returned to their village in the sub-district of Gandusari, which is located within the "red line" as they believed the condition was safe. Head of the Blitar district social affairs office Izul Marom said some of the refugees at Wlingi had returned to Gandusari. "They fled home to Wlingi when the volcano erupted but returned to their village again immediately after the condition looked safe as they had brought nothing when they left," Izul said. Izul said generally the villagers in the red line already knew what they had to do when the danger of eruption came. In Gandusari , a safe place has been provided for refugees that they could flee to that place any time there is danger of eruption, he said. In North Sumatra, in the regency of Tanah Karo, tens of people have been killed either by volcanic heat or poisonous gases over the past five months. The eruption of Mount Sinabung over the past five months has destroyed crops, livestock and farmlands that the government has to find new places for the farmers to live and grow crops. Meanwhile rain triggered flooding and landslides are no less devastating hitting many areas across the country. Flooding after weeks of incessant rain destroyed crops, inundated roads and highways. Houses were put under water as deep as three meters in Jakarta and other areas. Roads are full of pot holes endangering highway travelers and hampering traffic. source : http://www.republika.co.id/berita/en/national-politics/14/02/14/n0yrcv-angry-mount-kelud-sends-volcanic-ashes

  5. Sony will sell its struggling PC business to a Japanese investment firm, the company said Thursday, meaning the slick “Vaio” brand could all but disappear from markets outside Japan. Tokyo-based investment fund Japan Industrial Partners (JIP) will operate the Vaio PC brand under a newly established firm and initially sell PCs in Japan only. The moves come as Sony said it now expects a net loss of ¥110 billion ($1.1 billion) for the year to the end of March, a reversal of its October forecast for net profit of ¥30 billion. Vaio, which Sony introduced in 1996, looks set to vanish from most markets, at least for short term, as the new company will initially concentrate on selling consumer and corporate PCs in Japan. Whether or not Sony will continue to produce products under the Vaio brand remains to be seen, Sony said. Although Sony is selling its PC business, it will continue to produce tablet computers, part of its renewed focus on mobile devices including smartphones. Sony did not put a price on the sale, but a report in Japanese business daily Nikkei pegged it at about ¥40 billion to ¥50 billion. Sony will take a 5 percent stake in the new firm, it said. Sony will stop making and selling PCs after its 2014 Spring lineup launch, but about 250 to 300 Sony staff, including some from a subsidiary that produces TV sets, cameras and computers at factories in Japan, will be hired by the new company, which is to be based at the hub of Sony’s current PC business in Japan’s Nagano Prefecture. The Vaio sale was announced along with Sony’s earnings results for the October-December period, in which it posted an operating loss of ¥12.6 billion for the Mobile Products & Communications unit, which is responsible for PCs, sales of which were down significantly. The results were better than the ¥21.3 billion loss a year earlier. source : http://www.pcworld.com/article/2095180/sony-sheds-vaio-pc-business-turns-tv-unit-into-subsidiary.html

  6. Just saw the news after the holiday. Curiosity found firm clue that Mars may harbor life somewhere under its shell. Scientists confirmed that the rover found sources of methane coming our from the underground. The scientists are not sure about the source, but 95 percent of methane (CH4) here in Earth is produced by various lifeforms. The discovery was reported at the American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting. “It is one of the few hypotheses that we can propose that we must consider as we go forward,” said John P. Grotzinger, the mission’s project scientist. The scientists also reported that for the first time, they had confirmed the presence of carbon-based organic molecules in a rock sample. The so-called organics are not direct signs of life, past or present, but they lend weight to the possibility that Mars had the ingredients required for life, and may even still have them. 8. remember the old glory days, when everything is in rapidshare this is the news from them : RapidShare, one of the first file hosting services on the Internet, is shutting down next month. After March 31, all of its user accounts and data will be deleted. The Switzerland-based service went online in 2002 and saw hundreds of millions of monthly visitors during its glory days a few years ago. Chances are, most of them didn’t come to download the latest Creative Commons-licenced folk album, but unlike Megaupload, RapidShare managed to stay on the right side of the law. The service saw a surge of new users after the Megaupload shutdown in early 2012 and even had to limit download speeds to cope with demand for a while. source : http://techcrunch.com/2015/02/10/rapidshare-shuts-down/

  11. Hi all, I have few question, may be not allowed to do so, in this beloved forum.. 1..Can anyone tell me what is the consequences i m gonna face if i use crack software for a research work and wanna publish in a reputed journal? Will i have to face any question like have u used licensed version or not? or any type of query in the near future like this or how much secure is it. In a nutshell what i wanna is: I have crack software that gonna be used in the research work and i not in a state to buy these softs- what upshots gonna happened.... 2..As a newbie, can i publish a research work done by me lonely- i mean only one author, corresponding or first author is me in a high to mid impact-factored journals. Is it the fact is that as neophyte i have to resort to a skilled and high-measured researcher in the author list- is it the fact? Thanks in advance...

  12. I am researcher and I never think about this. Of course the specialties can be different and I imagine the most of you work in spatial things but not only that, more specifically in physical geography, I am geographer but work with social aspects. but if We see the main aspect in this topic We see a big, big problem if We are thinking in that; any cracked program you use to do the research, even the word processor, spreadsheet, unpacker, the operating system, must have the same relevance over research. If that is the situation no more research for us, because in some or a lot of cases maybe We can pay for license, but no buy shoes, food, water, etc for a time. For me that is nonsense, because the idea in research is find new knowledge, ideas, procedures and that is the significant We need to see. But if you think that is important, if you have a license or not and that is a requirement in Published standards, definitely yo can´t do research. And in that case try to write, calculate, execute the program and run the simulator, where is a licensed software, to meet the requirements that "System" claims, not the science (if this even is valid to) if you discover something new with or without license that is a discover and no matter if this was with a paid license or not, that is my opinion.

  14. The company, which announced in September it would be manufacturing 64-bit ARM processors, demonstrated a prototype of its new processor at a summit for the Open Compute Project (OCP) this week in San Jose, California. The pending AMD ARM processors, which will be under the AMD Opteron A1100 Series (or “A-series”) nameplate, will be manufactured using 28-nanometer fabrication technology. Based on the ARM Cortex A57 core design, the AMD Opteron A1100 Series processors will come in either four- or eight-core configurations, with 64GB DRAM. They will have up to 4MB of shared L2 and 8MB of shared L3 cache, and configurable dual DDR3 or DDR4 memory channels with error correcting code that can run up to 1,866 MT (million transfers) per second. The processors will be built on a system-on-a-chip (SoC) design and will feature eight lanes of PCI-Express Generation 3 I/O, eight Serial ATA 3 ports and two 10 Gigabit ethernet ports. They will also have encryption/decryption and data compression co-processors, and up to four SODIMM, UDIMM or RDIMM memory modules. The AMD Opteron A-Series development kit is in effect a sample bare-bones computer running on the ARM processor. It includes a Micro-ATX-sized motherboard, four DIMM slots that can hold up to 128GB of DDR3 DRAM, PCI Express connectors configurable as a single x8 or dual x4 ports, and eight Serial-ATA connectors. On the software side, the development kits will have a Fedora ARM Linux distribution, with device drivers and commonly used Web tier applications such as the Apache Web server, MySQL database engine, and the PHP, Java 7 and Java 8 programming languages. It also includes the standard Linux GNU tool chain for developing applications. It is booted through a standard UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) secure boot environment. source : http://www.pcworld.com/article/2092680/amd-debuts-first-arm-processor.html

  15. Lenovo said on Thursday that it would pay $2.3 billion for IBM’s low-end server business, successfully concluding a deal that had fizzled a year earlier after the two parties failed to agree on a price. Lenovo said it would settle the transaction with $2 billion in cash and the balance in its own Hong Kong-listed shares. About 7,500 IBM employees in locations including Raleigh, N.C., Shanghai and Shenzhen in China, and Taipei, Taiwan, were expected to be offered employment by Lenovo, the Chinese company said in a statement. “With the right strategy, great execution, continued innovation and a clear commitment to the x86 industry, we are confident that we can grow this business successfully for the long-term, just as we have done with our worldwide PC business,” Yang Yuanqing, Lenovo’s chairman and chief executive, said in a statement, referring to the server industry. Early last year, Lenovo and IBM were in negotiations about the unit, which includes IBM’s x86 server business. At the time, Lenovo valued the unit at about $2.5 billion, while IBM wanted at least $4 billion. IBM restarted talks with interested parties recently. Dell and Fujitsu were among the other bidders. But because Lenovo had already taken a close look at the business last year, it was able to quickly make an offer that IBM was comfortable with. Lenovo bought IBM’s ThinkPad personal computer business in 2005 for $1.75 billion. source : http://dealbook.nytimes.com/2014/01/23/lenovo-buys-ibm-server-business-for-2-3-billion/?_php=true&_type=blogs&_r=0 after laptop now server business sold to lenovo again
