A general guide for building drones or UAV's

Hello members of GIS AREA !

Drones, also named UAV's or UAS's, are becoming increasingly popular for different applications.

Me, I am interested in the field on drones applications for remote sensing, more exactly for aerial mapping, to produce orthophotos, Digital Terrain Models (DEM) and other products which are very useful for research or private businesses.

I would like to know more about how to build a personal drone from 0, how to selected the best platform for the application of aerial mapping, how to fly the drone and how to process the datasets obtained from drones. I know that, on this forum, there are some people who are using drones and it would be great to share some knowledge, some practical information to others interested in UAV drones.

Let's see what can we do.

Is someone interested to participate to this ?

:)

My best regards,

Arhanghelul

just adding some information, when you want to build a UAV you need to know what your purpose, whether you need a copter or fixed wing, both have advantages and disadvantages

I give you example from our project

copter, easy to navigate, easy to control, suitable for small area, relative detail since copter can fly in low altitude. travel only in short distance compare to fixed wing

fixed wing, suitable for large area, can fly in tenth of kilometers, hard to control especially at landing, cannot fly in low altitude,

I have 2 questions for Lurker:

1) do you need a special permission, a legal document to fly a drone in your country ? For example in USA, drone operators need to register (and to pay a fee) to Federal Aeronautical Agency, and similar situation is in some west European countryes ? How is in Indonesia ?

2) do you use Ground Control Points (GCP's) marked on the the land surface with the GPS when you fly your drone, to produce accurate orthophoto mosaics ?

Thank you.

1. recently after drone booming our government made a legal document to regulate drone , I think the main point or focus of the regulation is place that near airport or near military facility, or other official building, if you fly it on remote area or area far from plane route I think its okay to fly it without permission.

This legal document regulate to send a permission before flying a drone. We dont have a drone operator registration yet. :)

2. of course, if your drone data isnt GSP'd , then your data useless for detail analysis, we use geodetic GPS to make a GCP. (Topcon GR-5) and we use a banner (1.5 m x 1.5 m) for land marking. this is the most exaustive part of drone project :D

Lurker, how do you place Ground Control Points (GCP's) if for example you must fly your drone above a dense forest or a wetland with low or no accessibility ?

this is the tricky part  :P

if you have an area with dense forest, then I only think 2 ways :

1. You can extent your area to the place that contain open small area and you can place the GCP there

2. You can use specific natural object as GCPs

:P  :D
